Deals on Meals in Provence

Now more than ever, we want good value for money when eating out. In response, Michelin this week released the fifth edition of the Bonnes Petites Tables Guide for 2011. This is the “Bib Gourmand” book of lower-priced restaurants, where you can get a three-course meal for less than 35€ in Paris and 29€ outside the Paris area (33€ on weekends.)

The 2011 Guide includes 601 restaurants total, the most ever in its history, including 117 new listings. Michelin says the large number of restaurants offering great food at fair prices is “a sign of the times and an indicator of new culinary trends.” The Bib Gourmand label was first introduced in 1997.

The Bonnes Petites Tables du Guide Michelin France 2011 lists restaurants by region, with cities appearing in alphabetical order within each region. Each description presents the style of cooking, typical dishes, décor and other practical information.

All the restaurants will also be included in the Michelin Guide France 2011 (the Guide Rouge), identified with the Bib Gourmand icon, when it comes out later this year.

In other Michelin news, the company is organizing a special springtime promo in France called Printemps du Guide Michelin. From March 21 to June 21, more than 900 restaurants will offer special deals for readers upon presentation of a special pass, inserted in the Guide Rouge. The offers include specially priced menus, gourmet workshops, plus discounts on fixed-price menus and à la carte dishes. The list of participating restaurants and their offers will be posted on a dedicated website as of Monday February 28. A new feature this year: you can get a free one-month pass online, valid March 21 to April 21.

Meanwhile, the Bonnes Petites Tables 2011 guide is available in French only…in all the usual bookstores and online from Amazon.

But because I live to please you, dear reader, I’ve asked the nice folks at Michelin to pull out and list for us all the restaurants in the Provence Alpes Cote d’Azur (PACA) region. You can see that list below. The “N” after the name indicates that the restaurant is new to the guide this year. Bon App!

  7. Hi Julie!
    Thanks for the list! I have two favorites, although I don't know now if they are pricier that when we used to go there. One is Les Geraniums in Le Barroux, charming in the summer with that view, just up the road from Baumes de Venise and the other is Restaurant Four a Chaux near Caromb. There is a Poterie Four a Chaux where two artisans make incredible pieces I have a few and will treasure forever. Maryanne xo

  8. Thanks for sharing the new list for Provence Julie. I always try to get to the Bib restauranta in the Vaucluse. I have the impresion that some of the Bib restaurants in the 2010 edition in Vaucluse were dropped but I can"t verify since my copy is at our house in Sablet.

  11. Good God, how did I miss this post? How have I not known about this guide? Such a great concept - such a dangerous book! Must get one.

  13. I was trilled at this guide when I first saw Julie's post. I bought it as soon as I arrived in Nice, four weeks ago. It's a good value for the money; I've been using it actively since then. The guide proved its worth, however Í got a feeling of 'slight disappointment' regarding the lack of any coverage of the Cannes area. The guide says absolutely nothing about Michelin restaurants in Cannes and gives only one listing in Le Cannet, a village a few km north of Cannes. (I could not understand why is this, given the fact that Cannes is a prime location and receives so many business visitors and tourists).

    In the meantime, I screened 5-6 Michelin restaurants in central Cannes, all offering a 29 to 34 Euro lunch deal (menu du jour). So, my suggestion to those readers who identify their preferred location as ’missing’ in the guide: do not assume that there are no deals in that particular location. It pays off to do some homework, for example, consult www.viamichelin.com and walk and check the price ranges of relevant restaurants.

  14. PS. Following up on my previous comment, here are the Cannes restaurants that offer 'bonnes petites tables' deals:
    - Aux Bons Enfants, located at 80 Rue Meynadier, offers a fixed-price menu of 24 Euro;
    - Relais des Semailles, 9 Rue St-Antoine F., menu du marche of 34 Euro;
    - Mantel, 22 Rue St Antoine F., a menu of 28 Euro;
    - Rendez-Vous, 35 Rue Felix Faure, menus of 23 or 31 Euro;
    - Caveau 30, 45 Rue Felix Faure, a menu of 25 Euro;
    - Côté Jardin, 12 av. St-Louis, a menu of 30 Euro.
